A Wonderful Wedding Weekend

We were so pleased to be able to travel to Mississippi for the marriage of my brother, John Thomas, to the sweet and beautiful Laura Kathryn.

On Wednesday morning we left the house just after 3:30 a.m. heading to the airport and had two great flights with three great kids. Lydia slept and ate perfectly, Sarah contently read, colored, snacked, and enjoyed the window seat, and Josiah napped and snuggled. We made it to Hattiesburg in time to end the day with dinner at Chick Fil A.

In the event of an emergency, at least these two will know what to do!

Manly man :)

The kids were super excited to spot Josiah's suitcase!

Lydia, meet your Uncle T

Thursday started with a treat- getting my nails painted! Dave and I then had a birthday lunch with my sweet friend Lisa and enjoyed an afternoon at Target (our closest store is 45 minutes away!). Mrs. Glenda came over for one of my favorite MS dinners. Cornbread and butter beans (picked by the children that morning) can't be beat. The Patriots won to top off the evening.

Colored fingernails were fun for a change, though!

Friday the real excitement began. We all headed north about three hours to Yazoo City and got settled into our hotel. Mom and Mrs. Glenda were the most at home as they put together flower arrangements for the rehearsal dinner in the breakfast nook. My cousin Mary Helen and Aunt Susan kindly came to watch Josiah so we could be more fully present at the rehearsal. Our family rehearsal highlight was Sarah walking down the aisle with her sassy hand on her hip every time. Thankfully her hand was occupied with tossing flowers on Saturday! Dinner was yummy and the toasts were sweet and funny. Laura Kathryn gave Sarah what she has fondly dubbed her "bride baby," and then we took our exhausted girl back to the hotel for bed.

"Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton . . . " for wedding week!

Saturday started with a brunch for the ladies. Sarah was all about the orange juice and I loved meeting Laura Kathryn's family and friends. She has a super sweet entourage! It was special spending time with Aunt Karen and Mrs. Glenda at the brunch and throughout the weekend, as well. The kids got solid naps during the afternoon and we dressed up and headed to the church for pictures. Sarah unfortunately let herself get overwhelmed by the mere thought of picture time, but did a lovely job sprinkling her flowers during the ceremony. The service was so well planned and full of worship from start to finish. Afterwards we headed down the street to a beautiful building call The Manchester for dinner, dancing, and yummy cake. I love that Dave had the opportunity to meet some of my cousins for the first time and we all enjoyed seeing so many of our family and friends. Lydia topped off the evening by going 8 hours between feedings!

Boys didn't get brunch, but they certainly made their own fun

When you're two you don't have to nap with dignity.

. . . or when you're four. Dave is just thankful I don't have a picture of him napping :)

Lisa captured some great memories!

Hey, we tried our best for a family photo while we were all dressed up!

Sunday began with a leisurely breakfast and rehashing of our favorite wedding moments. Dave and I then met our friends Haley and Sam for lunch on the way back to Hattiesburg while Mom and Dad took the big kids to visit Aunt Marthy. Once home we unpacked, watched football, and Dave and I enjoyed getting away to visit the evening service at Temple Baptist Church. Boiled peanuts and milkshakes were the best end to the evening!

This does a heart good! Thankful for these newly weds.

On our last morning in Hattiesburg we tried multiple times to take the children to Krispy Kreme while the donuts were in process, but it was not to be. We did enjoy a nice morning strolling around Southern Miss and taking pictures on the ancient oaks just like when JT and I were kids. After nap time we headed south and enjoyed Chick Fil A in the south one final time before getting settled into the hotel and saying our "see you soons" to Goggin and Papa.

Monday started early and we had another great day of flying with the kids- praise the Lord! Once home we decided to have one last adventure and found the newest closest Chick Fil A to us. It opened September 4 and is about 10 minutes from the airport in Rhode Island. We made it home around 5:30 and had time to fully unpack and begin life on Tuesday ahead of the curve.

It was a whirlwind of a trip that was a joy from start to finish. Living so far away I feel like we measure the way our family grows by our trips to see family. The kids looks more grown, they have different likes, know new songs, and say more silly things each time and I am thankful for the imprint this wedding week will leave. Thanks for saying yes, Laura Kathryn!

Lydia's Birth Story

[Originally written one evening in the hospital in the post delivery fog of those first couple of days!]

Baby Sister was due August 25, 2014. We went to an appointment on the 25th and another on September 2nd. At the final office appointment we opted to give Baby Sister until the 42 week mark before we induced. After our final appointment (Tuesday) we went straight to the hospital for a non-stress test and ultrasound. The nurse/doctor team gave us the go ahead to keep waiting and scheduled another non-stress test for Friday.

6am Pappy and Gigi head home after spending two weeks with our family. Dave went back to sleep and I went to Panera for a little quiet time before the day began. Before heading home I started writing down regular back pain I was experiencing.

10:30 Our friend Kim came and picked up the kids for the morning so that I could go to a non-stress test at the hospital. Since I was having regular back pain, I asked Dave if he by any chance had anyone to visit that day. He did and was able to drive us.

11:00 The non-stress test started with an audible dip in Baby Sister’s heartbeat. The rest of the test was great, but the doctor wanted us to have another ultrasound to check the level of amniotic fluid. This was one of the neatest ultrasounds I have ever seen. The techs were very excited to have an OB patient and delighted in showing us our girl from every angle possible. We could even see her lips moving as she sucked her fingers!

Dave and I went back upstairs to the L&D triage nurse and waited to talk to the doctor. Dave ran out to pick up a quick KFC lunch and was back in time to hear the doctor say that fluid levels were on the low side of normal. Then he offered to induce us right then! One of our main goals with this delivery was to not get to the hospital too early and end up waiting for labor to really get going, so we gratefully declined. Dave took me back to the house and he went back to work.

3:00 By the time Sarah came down from nap time I was definitely calling my regular back pain contractions. I spent time sitting on the exercise ball and playing with Sarah. Contractions were about 10 minutes apart and painful enough that Sarah knew when I was having one. And not to touch me :)

5:00 My parents arrived just after Dave came home from work. Contractions were more like 7 minutes apart. As I sat and visited they got a little farther apart.

7:00 From past experience we knew that when I rested contractions spaced out and when I was on my feet they sped up. We put these contractions to the test by going for a walk around the neighborhood while my parents put the kids to bed. Sure enough, contractions dropped to 4-5 minutes apart and were painful enough that I needed to stop and lean over.

7:45 We went home and I laid down. Contractions did space out to 7-8 minutes apart, but were quite painful.

8:09 Made the call to call the doctor. We knew at this point we were ready to head to the hospital. (When we saw him the next morning he said that he checked on me with the nurses in the middle of the night and was quite surprised that I had already delivered. Based on my tone over the phone he thought it was going to be longer. I'm glad we didn't take our time getting to the hospital, as he kindly recommended!)

8:40 Arrived at the hospital and headed to triage. They hooked me up the monitors and we talked about how back labor would be a little different than traditional labor. After a long pep talk by a kind nurse about how I might not have progressed past the 3 cm dilation I was at my Tuesday appointment, they check me and said I was at 7-8 cm. Woo hoo! With that news they promptly found a room for us and we got started on paperwork.

At this point I can’t be sure of the timing of anything. I can only testify to the intensity of those contractions and the resilience and endurance of my husband, who pressed hard on my hips and my back with every contraction while helping me answer questions and sign forms during breaks. At one point the midwife checked me and I was at 9 cm. At another point I elbowed Dave in the face.

It wasn’t long before there weren’t really any breaks and I felt that the time to push was upon us, ready or not! Thankfully the midwife agreed and said to just go for it. In past deliveries there were practice pushes and counting to ten and such, even though both of the kids came in a just a push or two. With this delivery she just said push when you feel like pushing. Since that was pretty much the only option my body was giving me at that point, I did, and just kept pushing as her head, shoulders, and body were delivered quickly. It was 10:55pm. Dave helped to catch her as she was born. They broke my water as she was being delivered. The nurses guess it was in the 60 seconds before she was born, which was significant since I didn’t get my four hours of strep B antibiotic and Baby Sister was technically exposed, but only for the less than 60 seconds as she was delivered.

The nurses put her right on my chest and Dave took pictures. She cried right away and then was quiet and serene. She was born with her hand by her face just like the ultrasound showed us less than 12 hours earlier, and even had suck marks on her knuckles. They let her lay with me for more than an hour while they finished up their work and she worked on eating for the first time. She was so good at pacifying herself with her hand that she wasn’t very interested in eating right away. During this time Dave and I decided for sure that she was Lydia Elizabeth. When everything slowed down the final nurse weighed and measured her and declared her perfect in every way. We couldn’t agree more!

Happy 1 month, Lydia!

Ahhh, a new beginning . . . here is Lydia's first monthly update! Our month getting to know Lydia has truly been a joy. She is a relatively happy baby and the delight of her brother and sister. We have seen her become a more confident eater, deeper sleeper, and more alert little girl. In a fresh way we are enjoying having Lydia as a baby. We soak up her snuggles and don't worry if she falls asleep in our arms rather than in the pack n' play. The Lord is growing us as parents and we so very thankful!

Weight: 12 lbs 5 oz (99%)
Length: 24 in (98%)
Head: 15 in (90%)

[For the sake of comparison, at her 6 day weight check she was 9 lbs 1 oz, 21 inches long, and had a 14 inch head circumference. At 3 weeks and 3 days we did a nursing weight check and she was (clothed) 11 lbs 4 oz at the beginning and 11 lbs 13 oz after eating. When weight changes that much after a feeding it makes every weigh-in seem very relative!]

Nursing: Lydia continues to be a healthy eater. She is faster than the others were at this age, which is very convenient. She spits up occasionally, which the big kids didn't do much, but we have seen it taper and we aren't worried that it is reflux.

Schedule: We are flexible, she is flexible, life is good. From the beginning we have been a little more easy going about cluster feedings and abnormal cycles. We still generally try for a feed, wake, sleep routine and try to start Lydia's day around 7am.

Sleep: Praise the Lord, Lydia is a pretty good sleeper. During the day she usually has a couple of sleepy cycles and a couple of alert cycles, but at night she is usually very settled and goes right back to sleep after eating. She took a pacifier when offered at day 5 and hasn't looked back. It is very soothing to our girl who was born with her hand next to her mouth!

Physically: Lydia still has just the littlest bit of dark hair. It hasn't started to grow, but hasn't started falling out either. Her eyes are definitely dark and it is looking like we will have another brown eyed girl on our hands. She likes tummy time! Twice this week she has fallen asleep while on her tummy.

Next appointment: Monday, November 10, 2014 at 10:40- this will be a joint well visit with Josiah, who has a 2.5 year check up
