Whale Watch!

Dave and I have long wanted to play the part of tourists since moving to the Cape by going on a whale watch. This summer, we heard that there were more sights than usual and Dave jumped on the opportunity to surprise me. He loves to keep me guessing!

Monday, August 11, was a beautiful morning. A friend had offered to watch to the kids so we could go out for a bit before Baby Sister came (this friend has three kids . . . she knew how to bless us well!) and Dave had talked to her about making it an extended morning.

The tide was low as we left Barnstable Harbor.
The tip of Sandy Neck from the water.

Another whale watching boat and a spout!

The humpbacks made the icon dives.

This is a fin whale, the second largest animal on the earth (after the blue whale).

Open mouth for feeding time. The boats don't bait the whales in any way, but they do have jets that stir up the rich water that the whales enjoy.

The humpback we watched had a baby with her. (baby on right.) Though it was still nursing, at times the baby practiced open mouth feeding like the mom.

A Night To Remember

One week ago, Friday, June 6, I had the opportunity to go to Boston and see the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall. But this wasn't just any night at the Pops (which would be amazing!). John Williams was the conductor and the evening was named Film Night. Oh my.

We returned from our trip to see family the Monday before. I spent the week unpacking, taking care of things around the house, and helping our kids adjust back to life with just mom for entertainment. The kids and I had a special plan for Friday though. We were going to north Boston with a friend and her daughter for the day. It was an adventure and we love adventures! We picked our friends up at 9:45am and had a great day.

As I was pulling into our neighborhood right around 5:00pm I received a text message from a friend. It said she had a free extra ticket to the Pops and all Dave or I had to do was meet her in Boston to claim it. I pulled in the driveway and Dave said I had to go. I was unsure. It had literally just driven home from Boston. I was tired from a day with the kids. Then he dropped the John Williams Film Night bomb on me and I knew there was no way I could say no. I quickly changed, refilled my water bottle, and was one the road by 5:15pm.

It turns out our friend, who is an elementary school music teacher, was taking her 6th graders on a field trip. (I didn't even find this out until I got there. I just knew to be at the doors at 7:30pm!) One mom and her son from church were part of the group. While I would have most loved to share the moment with Dave, I was thankful to have known a few other people.

Here is the program for the evening.

He ended the night with THREE encores. I believe the first may have been from E.T., the second was the Darth Vader March, and the third was the NBC theme song.

The NBC theme song and Call of the Champions are my all time favorite Williams pieces. Other favorites he shared during the evening were the theme from Jurassic Park, Flight to Neverland from Hook, and Harry's Wondrous World from Harry Potter. There were excellent videos that accompanied several of the pieces. A really special one went along with a piece from Saving Private Ryan and he spent a moment commemorating D-Day, as it was the 70th anniversary that very evening.

He also said "may the force be with you"- an epic moment!

It was truly an adventure- a night to remember.

The Blizzard of 2013

It looks like the name Nemo just wouldn't stick, as even the news is calling it the 2013 blizzard now. It hit us hard up here on the Cape, mostly because it left a vast majority of the homes here without power for 1-4 days.

Were it not for the power outage, the blizzard would have been pure fun. It came Friday night, which would have left us with nothing to do but play in the snow, attend Sunday worship, and play in the snow some more. But with a power outage, it suddenly becomes much more difficult. The heat goes out in the house, along with most of the other houses, the house gets cold, you get cold, and freezing pipes become a real danger.

We first lost power late Friday night, as Emily and the kids slept and I kept a fire going. By morning, the house was in the high 50's, although we didn't notice until we got out from under our covers. The snow had piled up the night before, which you can see in the series of pictures Emily took (the captions are hers also.)

10:30pm- I went to sleep!

9:00am backyard...lots of sticky snow
Front yard at 9:00am. It kept snowing until about 4:00pm!
Sarah went with us to check out the snow drift against the garage door. That is her "stay warm inside" outfit for the day- PJs on top and lots of layers underneath!

This was in the driveway after the guys shoveled and snow blowed (blew? my southern education has not prepared me for this situation!) .
Back of the house from the wood pile Saturday afternoon. It would have been quite beautiful if we had heat :)
We were surprised at how well they kept warm

Our sun room stays in the 30's for most of the winter, so early Saturday we took our food out of our refrigerator and set it out on the table in hopes it would stay fresh. Some of the church guys went around and shoveled some driveways, which helped me occupy myself during the afternoon.

With a cooling house, kids who had already spent the day wearing coats in the dark, and our phones losing charge, we decided to spend the night in the church office building. The church building was one of the few that had power, so we spent a warm night there with any number of electronic devices charging.

Sunday worship was cancelled, so we slept in Sunday. We spent the morning at a friend's house eating a hot breakfast, freshening up, and laughing. The shower was most welcome, as wearing a coat all day and never showering can get to feeling pretty gross. Also, the light from the snow and their windows made for some great pictures of Josiah's bath.

Concerned about freezing pipes and thawing freezer goods, I came back to the house to start another fire and set our frozen food out in the snow. Of course, I had to take some pictures, too.

Some friends down the street had their power restored, so we spent the night at their house with them and another couple. Each family had children, so it turned into quite the slumber party!

Monday morning I came back and checked on things, finding the temperature to be 40 degrees. The faucets had already been on a slow drip since the day before (to prevent freezing). Between the two of those, I was confident we had at least two more days before I truly needed to worry about freezing pipes. We went to the mall so that the kids could run around and spent the afternoon with our friends again.

Then, Monday night, we got a call from a neighbor saying the power was back! The house warmed up fairly quickly, although our beds were cold when we first got in them! The next day I went in to work while Emily got the house back in order. A day later, you would have never known what the house had been through.

It was quite an adventure, one that we are thankful God brought us through. I had never been so thankful for God's protective watch over our children and the warm beds He gives them. We can say on both sides of it that God was good to us.

Snow Fun Around Town

Snow on a day off is the best- you don't have to go anywhere if you don't want to, and you have time to enjoy it. But if you do want to go somewhere, you can! And that's just what I did. I had never seen snow on the beach before, and somehow forgot to check it out last winter. So I took my camera down to Dowses Beach just before the daylight hours ended and caught some pictures.

The roads weren't bad at all, as the Northeast usually knows how to manage snow. And, for some reason, they had even plowed the parking lot at Dowses!

East Bay

The red stuff you see is seaweed- we have a surplus of it.

I baptized my parents in that water!
On the way back, I saw the clock glowing in front of the church and just had to get this shot.

It was a fun journey- even better to come home to a warm home and warmer family. What a beautiful part of the world God has called us to.

Snow Fun Around the House

Just today a native New Englander and I were talking on the phone and she asked if I liked the Northeast compared to Florida. "One of my favorite things," I told her, "is the snow." And it really is true. While I'll always miss water-skiing with my Mom and Dad on New Year's Day, and they took me other places that had the most amazing snow I've still seen, there is something wonderful about living in the snow.

We got our first respectable snow last weekend, at about 7 inches on our lawn. Sarah enjoyed it for the first time, and I finally was able to access the beach for some photographs (which we'll post soon.)

Little Girl likes the taste of snow.
And she really likes being pulled on her sled.
Later on, we built this guy.
Emily helped for a while, and then came in to watch Sarah watch me.
So I just had to come play with her. Her reflection in the glass is perfect.
Waving at all the passersby.
A friend came by with a snow blower, and even let me have a go.
